Worrying about how you are going to carry your phone when you are out running can be a stressful event, particularly as these days the pockets in your shorts seem to be getting smaller and smaller. “Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike” by Phil Knight
For those of you seeking to improve your mind and not just your running performance, Phil Knight’s absorbing memoir of how he, alongside the enigmatic Bill Bowerman, from a small independent sports company called Blue Ribbon Sports, created the largest and most successful sports corporation in history, ‘Nike’.
For every runner, sports enthusiast and inquisitive business mind this is the must have book of 2020. Having already purchased this as a gift for someone, it is taking all my energy not just to open it and start reading.
This brilliant, interesting and enjoyable book is available at most independent book shops, or online, here.

This is another gadget to aid your recovery, you can thank us later. It’s a device that sits over your feet and legs and, equipped with strategically placed airbags and a user control device, it delivers a full sports massage simulation.

Christmas might be the perfect time to get your hands on a ‘Super Shoe’ so that you are race ready for next year. Never has the selection been more enticing and accessible.
Whether you’re a fan of the staple offerings from Nike, in the form of the Vaporfly Next% or the Alphafly, which you can still pick up on the Nike website. There are many other options available including the Adidas Adios Adizero Pro, the New Balance RC Elite, the Saucony Endorphin Pro or the HOKA Rocket X.
We recently uploaded a video reviewing the HOKA Rocket X which you can view here. Or you can check out our video with Paul Freary, the Running Shoe Guru, here, where we discuss the latest super shoe line-up so you can choose which one takes your fancy.
Another offering in the form of recovery is a bit of modern technology that is proving vital to all serious runners, particularly those who are clocking up a lot of miles. Muscle guns provide a convenient and effective way to increase blood-flow and reduce muscle soreness through the employment of percussive therapies.
Similar to massage they can loosen tight muscles and leave you feeling better to tackle your next session. There are a number of different ones available but they essentially all do similar things. The best value one we could find online is the ‘Bozaap Handheld Electronic Massage Gun’.
It’s portable, cordless, has 3 speeds and includes 6 replaceable heads. It could be the perfect gift for any runner this year.
You can pick one up here.
As runners we all love stats. There is nothing better than that post-run ritual of settling in with a cup of tea and reviewing your stats. Cadence, heart-rate, pace and elevation. Well if you want to be able to review the most advanced running dynamics on offer today then pairing your Garmin with the ‘HRM-Run’ chest monitor is just the gadget that needs to be on your Christmas list. The strap is light, comfortable and small – you barely notice it when you are out for your run.
Additional metrics include:
- More accurate cadence measurements.
- More accurate heart-rate data versus wrist based technology.
- Vertical oscillation data – in other words the ‘bounce’ or vertical motion in your torso.
- Ground contact time
- Ground contact time balance – in other words the different between the amount of time your left and right feet are in contact with the ground when you run.
- Stride length
- Vertical ratio – a figure which gives you an idea of the efficiency of your running form by calculating the ratio between your stride length vertical oscillation.
